Itlab Guide to Scientific Posters

Creating

The printing company can scale your poster to the final size, so you can author your poster in the size most suitable for editing and previewing.

When using pixel-based images, do consider the final poster size to achieve reasonable resolution (e.g. 300 dpi), when preparing them. If you create in A3 size and your final size is A1, the physical dimensions will be doubled in both directions: you need to prepare the images in 600 dpi to get 300 dpi in the final.

As with any PDF file, it is important to either embed all fonts or convert them to outlines (vectorize the fonts). Otherwise you may get a random font substituted at printing time, and your layout will break. What is worse, every printer may substitute a different font.

LaTeX (PDF)

The unofficial itlab Poster template is found in the CVS module itlab, directory doc/poster.

It is based on the sciposter document class, modified to use packages graphicx and xcolor. See the sciposter documentation.

  • Good poster size is A1 which is Width: 594 mm and Height: 840.
  • Use tile full page when print to itlab printers (A3).
  • For making the actual poster it is wise to save the image in eps-format (that is printable by the printing companies). But before that:
    • Postscript level: 1 (this is the safest to use)
    • First save your Illustrator file with different name
    • Vectorize (outline) fonts: select text and under rightmost mouse button select create outlines
    • Convert images to CMYK color-space: Select object and choose from menus filter→color→convert to CMYK
  • For printing save eps-file to cd-rom and deliver it to you poster maker.
