  • Jari Porras (Ph.D), is Professor at the Department of Information Technology at the Lappeenranta University, Finland. Prof. Porras received the Dr. Sc. (Tech.) degree from the Lappeenranta University of Technology, Finland in 1998 about modelling and simulation of distributed communication environments. His interests include wireless networks, ad-hoc networking, peer-to-peer computing, aspects of Grid computing as well as distributed computing and distributed environments. Prof. Porras acts as the representative of Lappeenranta University of Technology in the Wireless World Research Forum (WWRF) and a representative of Academy of Finland at MiNEMA (Middleware for Network Eccentric and Mobile Applications) Research Network steering group.

TEACHING AND EDUCATIONAL MERITS

Teaching I have been lecturing 30+ different courses at various universities including Lappeenranta University of Technology, Joensuu University, Kuopio University and Helsinki University of Technology. During my career I have given 150+ courses. I have given courses both in english and in finnish (for the last years mainly in english). I have been granted the lecturer of the year prize by the Lappeenranta University of Technology in 2000.

Supervision

  • During my academic career I have had the possibility to be the supervisor/inspector of 150+ Master’s thesis works.
  • Supervised/inspected the following licentiate thesis works: Jouni Ikonen (1996), Juha Korhonen (2001), Kari Heikkinen (2002), Jaakko Kangasharju/HY (2006) and Timo Kivikangas (2007)
  • Supervised six doctoral works (Jouni Ikonen 2001, Pentti Huttunen 2002, Pekka Jäppinen 2004, Heikkinen 2005, Liisa-maija Sainio 2005, Matti Juutilainen 2009). Acted as the preexaminer of ten doctoral works (Juha Taina 2003, Kimmo Pulakka 2004, Seamus Hickey 2004, Yi Zeng, Singapore 2005, Marko Palviainen 2007, Oriana Riva 2007, Jaakko Kangasharju 2007, Mauri Kuorilehto 2008, Mikko Kohvakka 2008/2009, Francis Tam 2008/2009).
