MVPR is looking for a doctoral student to work in the ReVision project

(Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) is a university specialising in technology and business studies in South East Finland with approximately 6000 students and 1000 staff members. The Machine Vision and Pattern Recognition Laboratory (MVPR) in the Department of Information Technology in LUT is active in research of computer and machine vision including medical image processing and analysis.

The Machine Vision and Pattern Recognition Laboratory is looking for

a Doctoral Student

to carry out research on medical image processing and analysis methods for retinal images.


The candidate will work in the research project Re-Engineering Retinal Imaging with Photonics and Computational Science (ReVision) funded by the Academy of Finland. The project has strong national (the University of Eastern Finland and the University of Tampere) and international (the University of Birmingham and Tokyo Institute of Technology) collaboration. The research focus of MVPR will be on appropriate collection and processing of expert information and on the usage of image information for automatic and semi-automatic diagnosis of eye diseases.


The position requires a higher university degree from a suitable discipline such as Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Artificial Intelligence or Machine Learning, and motivation to complete the doctoral degree within the target time of 3.5 years. In addition, the candidate is required to present a postgraduate study plan and a research plan, which are approved at the beginning of the employment relationship (for the person appointed). Theoretical skills, knowledge of probabilistic models, and familiarity with medical imaging and image processing are considered as advantages. The candidate is also expected to have good programming skills, preferably in Matlab, and to be able to communicate fluently in English.


The objective for the doctoral student is to complete the doctoral degree in 3.5 years. The employment contract is fixed-term and the duration of the first term is one year. If the doctoral studies progress as planned and the results are as expected, the employment relationship may be continued for a second term lasting 2.5 years. The salary will be determined according to the university salary system for teaching and research personnel, job demand levels 1-4 (1747.01 - 2403.36 EUR/month). In addition, the salary will include an individual pay component based on the performance and competence, amounting to a maximum of 46.3 % of the job-specific pay component.

  4. Copies of the degree certificates of both the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees.

  6. An electronic copy of the M.Sc. thesis as a reasonably sized PDF file.
