Our project is focused on the direct numerical simulation of two immiscible viscous fluids separated by their natural, moving interface.
The main examples of such flows include the evolution of ocean waves,
the propagation of liquid jets, the motion of thin liquid films and
the dynamics of gas bubbles and liquid droplets. We are especially interested in the modelling of the latter phenomena, since they present an excellent example of the complex
interplay between fluid convection, viscosity and surface tension effects.
The subject of our current research is the computational modelling of the dynamics of a single gas bubble or a small group of bubbles (a bubble swarm) with the particular emphasis on the coalescence and breakage phenomena.
This research was started in 2000 in the
Applied Mathematics Laboratory at
Lappeenranta University of Technology, FINLAND.
